Creating a website is just the first step in creating an internet presence. Once you build and launch the site, now you have to drive traffic to it. You can do this in a number of ways. Some cost money while some are free but cost lots of time and effort. Regardless of which techniques you choose, it is a good idea to try several different approaches simultaneously for best results.
The following traffic techniques work the best:

    Writing and Submitting Articles
Writing articles is an effective free way of driving traffic. When you write a 500 word article, submit it to article directories. Your article can give a backlink to your website with a link in the author information area. The web has lots of article directories to choose from. You can submit to some or all of these directories. Some authors believe that you should submit to as many as possible. Others believe that there are only four main article directories you should submit to:

    articlecity.com
    ezinearticles.com
    ideamarketers.com
    goarticles.com
When using article marketing on lots of directories, you should also consider using automated tools to help you submit the articles since it can be a very time consuming task.

    Pay Per Click
If you want traffic right away, the best way is to use pay per click advertising. Google and Yahoo let you create a brief text link ad and show it in the search results such that you must pay money for each time someone clicks on your link and visits your site. Pay Per Click lets you pay money to drive traffic to your website, and it does indeed work. But you must be careful with PPC advertising because it can get very expensive very quickly.

    Web 2.0 Bookmarking
Web 2.0 or Social Bookmarking is a technique that can be very effective in creating backlinks. To use Social Bookmarking, create accounts at sites like Furl.net or Onlywire.com and post your website URL as a bookmark. Bookmarks on these websites are very valuable as backlinks. When other users see your website bookmarks, other users can also bookmark your site, giving you additional links. So, if you can convince other people to bookmark your website, you can get a potentially unlimited number of backlinks.

    Leave Comments On Forums
Just about any topic will have forums on the web related to that topic. Post a useful comment or two on these forums and you can get a backlink for your efforts. Many forums will not allow you to specifically promote your website, but they will let you post on the forum as long as your comment is useful and relevant.

    Leave Comments On Blogs
Blogs also allow you to comment. Just like for forums, you must leave comments that are thoughtful and relevant or your comments and backlinks will be rejected. Also, try to comment on blogs that do not have “no follow” in the links, because “no follow” links do not pass page rank to your website.

    Link Networks
New technologies and systems are now available to partially or fully automate the process of getting backlinks. Backlink networks give you backlinks from other sites in the network. These networks make it really easy to get links without spending lots of time and money.

When considering an automated approach, it is important to look at all the features it offers. Are the backlinks one way or reciprocal? Does it let you submit articles so you get backlinks in context? Can you get free articles from other users? Does it offer social bookmarking capabilities? Does it encourage everyone in the system to help each other with social bookmarking? Selecting an automated system with these features can be the single most important step you take in solving your backlink problem.

You have several domains that you want to go to the same IP but this will likely have a negative impact for your site in the search engines. If you “forward” the alternate URLs to the main IP it is often considered spam because you’re trying to index multiple website domain names that point to the same physical content on the server.

A better option is to park the alternate domains on top of the main domain and create a search-engine friendly 301 redirect. Search engines will index only the new URL, but will transfer link popularity from the old URL to the new one so that search engine rankings are not affected. The same behavior occurs when additional domains are set to point to the main domain through a 301 redirect. By using what is called an “IP funnel”, you will have multiple domains pointed to the same site but you won’t risk duplicate content issues.

You can also use a 301 redirection for common misspelled versions of your domain name or for other good domain names that you don’t want your competitors to get.

Google has been displaying site links - the linked words below a main search result that leads to internal pages of that website - for some time now. But there has been a restructuring. Now, instead of the stacked appearance of several links, in several columns, more sitelinks are being seen on one line, just four across at the bottom of the result. As such, you can expect to see more results on the results page, as there will be more room.

Google Scholar - in beta since 2004 - epitomizes the problems of the internet. It provides easy access to advanced research that can be used by students - but whether it is used for citations or to plagiarize is the deeper problem.

The site uses an academic approach to ranking. “Google Scholar aims to sort articles the way researchers do, weighing the full text of each article, the author, the publication in which the article appears, and how often the piece has been cited in other scholarly literature. The most relevant results will always appear on the first page.”

What plagiarists must know is that professors know how to use it as well to check if they are cheating. There are even sites like turnitin.com where teachers can submit papers and have them checked for originality.

Without a doubt Google Scholar helps improve access to academic research for students, and students are becoming well aware that teachers are tech savvy as well. If used properly it is a great example of the benefits the web provides.

Google Scholar has even released a toolbar plug in for Firefox browsers.

Sony’s semi-official PlayStation blog focusing on UK primarily, but being a source of information relevant for most of Europe, Three Speech is shutting down on April 17, leaving room for an official blog much like the US one. The regular readers will obviously miss Three Speech, but personally I think it is the right way to go for Sony UK. Three Speech was one of those blogs that you never really knew how much you could trust, better to be official in an open way, than to be shy about it. I guess the folks at Sony figured that out.

When you have created your website, there are several steps you can tips you can implement to start optimizing your site for search engines from the ground up. If you have selected strong keywords and keyword phrases, given your site its basic structure and drafted your content, then the next step is to optimize that content onpage.

Start by going through your content and identifying where you have used the keywords that you wish to be strongly identified in your site and in your message to your audience. What you are looking to do here is find a place that lends itself to having the keyword bolded, italicized or underlined. You only want to do this once, dont over do it. If you can see a spot that most naturally lends itself to this even better, as it affords more appeal for human viewers, not just the search engine crawlers.

Next look for a place that is suitable for a sub heading, somewhere around about the half way point in your webpage is ideal. This should have an html h2 header and should contain the second most important of your keywords. This guides both the human reader and the search engine crawler to the key points that you wish to be identified.

Moving upwards you next need to implement a page heading. This is the next step up from your subheading or h2 header and should include the most important keyword that you have selected. Your header should be identified by a h1 tag linked to the primary keyword. Once this is done you then want to place this all important heading somewhere in the top left hand side of the page or in the top, middle section of the web page.

The final step up is the top most heading, the actual page title. This is a crucial step to consider carefully. You should include the main keywords here and the fewer the better. When you make a strong title from your primary keywords, with out any unnecessary extras, you give your title more strength. The search engines give the words higher value when there are less of them and can show rapid results in boosting your page ranking.

Finally you should look at whether or not you have included any images or graphics on your page and have you labeled them correctly? Many people mistakenly forget to do this last vital step and you are missing an opportunity to include keyword rich tags when you skip this. An alt image tag is used to identify what the picture or graphic on the site is, either if the picture doesnt load or if being viewed by a blind person (it is read aloud). By using your keywords to identify your graphic or image, for example pet food image, you are adding a little extra weight when the search engines crawl your site. As with your other elements, dont over do it, there is more weight in doing it simply and effectively.

When you have completed these steps you will see that just a few small improvements upon your website will tweak your search engine results and make it a stronger contender in the search engine rankings. Competition is fierce, so take advantage of doing the little things to boost your site in a big way!
