A client of mine recently had their website hacked by someone who put invisible code on the sites homepage with links to other sites. Google detected this and reported it in the clients Google Sitemap account. The site did get removed from the Google index but was added back with no loss of rankings within 48 hours.

I had to remove the offending code and replace the pages and then had to request reconsideration from Google. The notice they sent said the site was going to be removed for 30 days but luckily it was back within 2 days and Google was very helpful during the process.

It's hard to say how this happened but the most likely scenario is that someone got the FTP login name and password. Its important that you use a reputable webhosting company and that you make sure to use a good password for your FTP account. Its not a bad idea to change this on a frequent basis.  Its also important to have a Google sitemap account setup for your site, this way Google can contact you quickly if it sees a problem with your site.

Search engine optimization (SEO) and social media optimization (SMO) are two different techniques with a common aim. While SEO methods have been popular almost since the advent of Internet, SMO is relatively new. With more innovations happening in both levels, many experts now argue that SEO can be integrated in SMO.

The whole concept of SEO focuses on optimizing the Web site for search engines. This is important considering the role search engines play for driving traffic to a Web site. In fact, a Web site’s PageRank is now accepted as a criterion to decide the popularity of the Web site. Customers are likely to get attracted to a Web site that shows up on top of the search engine page result (SERP). They assume that only successful Web sites (read businesses) can achieve the top rank from popular search engines such as Google.

With so much of relevance for search engine optimization, Web sites have explored different ways to improve PageRank. Popular methods include keyword optimization, link exchange, social bookmarking, and pay-per-click advertising. With the evolution of social networking solutions, some of these SEO techniques are now merged with SEM techniques. Typical example is exchange of links through mass email, blogs and forums enabled through social communities such as MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Social media optimization though focuses greatly on communicating with individual community members using popular communication methods such as email, instant messenger (IM), Skype, Twitter, etc. Unlike the SEO methods, there is a personal involvement in these communications. For example, a micro-blogging application Twitter enables a Web site owner to regularly send Tweets (small messages in the form of text, image, video, Podcast, and links) to customers on a regular basis. There are provisions to customize the message by displaying the logo and theme of the brand.

Twitter is the latest example that shows how SEO can be integrated with SMO. Twitter allows Web sites to share their contents through RSS or direct links to a large community managed by highly popular Web site Twitter. Other Web sites offering such micro-blogging services are Jaiku, Pownce, Tumblr, and MySay. Micro-blogging is now integrated with popular social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Orkut. These are the best-rated Web sites among the trillions of Web sites launched in the World Wide Web. This would mean that any Web site that gains traffic through these sites will get a share of their popularity.

More such innovations are expected in the coming years. Any technology that facilitates smart and fast communication is the need of the day.

As part of our standard operating procedure around here we setup all of our sites with Google Analytics including goal tracking and funnel pages. Recently however I came across an anomaly on one of our client’s sites. I’m not at liberty to reveal the client so I can’t back up what I’m about to tell you with screenshots, however I am fairly confident that goal tracking via Analytics can play a large part in determining how Google calculates sitelinks. How? A form spammer recently spammed the hell out of one of our forms that was tied to a goal conversion. The site in question is little more than an SEO directory of states and the form spammer just happened to trip conversions in analytics on the South Dakota page. Now I can promise you we get very light traffic on the South Dakota page compared to some of the larger states like NY and California, however over the course of a week the spammer completed 100’s of conversions on the page before we were able to beef up countermeasures. A couple of weeks later I noticed a funny thing in my Google Webmaster Tools account: the South Dakota page had been picked up as a sitelink.

Some specifics for my blackhat readers:

All ip’s used by the spammer were from the same subnet, but were more or less unique ip’s.
The site typically has 50-100 conversions per day.

Doing a search of some of the older content on Search Engine Watch, I came across an article about Yahoo’s once free business websites. That offer has long been dropped and replaced with a paid offering, while Google has had free Google Page Creator which has since been moved to Google Sites.

It is interesting to watch how Google and Yahoo explore similar products and then how one company drops one while the other keeps them. For example, Google Answers dropped but Yahoo has kept their version.

Twitter is fast becoming a place where you can let your fictional characters (and brands) come to life, with minimal effort should be noted. The latest to join in is Shamu, the killer whale of SeaWorld fame.

Bio I live at SeaWorld. I’m a large, athletic, black and white marine mammal. I’m not THE star of SeaWorld, I’m A star of SeaWorld

Follow @RealShamu if you like. Personally, I think the concept is more interesting than the tweets this time around.

tweetminster-wire-screenshotTweetminster, the web service that tracks British politicians’ use of Twitter, has announced a beta version of its Adobe Air-based Tweetminster Wire desktop application.

The service is designed to make it easier to track conversations about UK politics, including live streams on MPs and PPCs (prospective parliamentary candidates) who use Twitter, tweets from all major parties, UK parliament and government tweets, relevant conversations, plus any posts including the #tmwire hashtag.

Other features include the ability to search tweets, view and compare topics and identify trends in UK politics.

Under the hood it’s a fairly standard Twitter desktop client reminiscent of Tweekdeck. However, it’s supposed to reduce the noise of the general Twitterverse by narrowing down tweets to those that are relevant to UK politics. Presumably it’s not going to get this right all the time, but for anyone with an interest in UK politics who doesn’t want to do the legwork of setting up their own searches and finding relevant people to follow, it could be a useful application.

Google’s Picasa is getting Adwords, just like Google News and Google Image Search.

Google Operating System reports Picasa is the latest Google property to be monetized with Google AdWords ads. If you conduct searches for pictures in Picasa’s web albums, you will find the ads at the top of the image results.

Google continues to increase its revenue stream in this downed economy by placing ads on every property it can. It stock price went down from whopping $700 to $350 which forced Google to pay down money to its employees.

The question is? How much can Google monetize? There are only so many properties it can put ads on? What happens after? Where does it go in search of revenue? Mobile search and book search look very good.
