    There is not enough attention paid to the good deeds that happen in the technology business. Instead, we obsess over minor changes at Google or what Twitter will do to make money.  When I hear of a good deed that's happened in the Web and technology industries, it's good to mention it, as it may spur others to give back in any way they can. Plus, if you know how to work it, you can get some coverage for your company, too.

    It shouldn't surprise anyone, but a new study surveying 900 marketers and sponsored by Social Media Success Summit 2009 shows that marketers are heavily invested in social media, to the tune of 88 percent using at least one social outlet. What is a little surprising is that 72 percent of respondents claim they have only been using these resources for a few months or less.

    According to the study, the top social sites in use by marketers are Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

    For small business owners the Internet has proved to be extremely beneficial. Unlike traditional forms of advertising and marketing the Internet provides several advantages that helps small business to reach more potential customers and also get better value for money. While traditional advertising requires organizations to spend thousands of dollars on branding and promotional activities, with online advertising and effective search engine optimization better results can be achieved at much lower cost. Moreover results achieved in the Internet media offers more lasting benefits than conventional promotions.

    Small business owners can reach a large customer base with the help of effective search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) strategies. More than 80% of people searching for goods and services start with Internet to find them. Therefore if a small business can attract even a small part of these potential customers to its website and eventually convert then into actual buyers it can increase its online revenues significantly.

    Internet marketing, which includes SEO and SEM, requires formulating and implementing effective strategies to draw more targeted traffic that can eventually be converted into customers. Although every business must consider optimizing their websites in the search engines, for e-commerce website it is an ‘absolute must’.

    Small business enterprises engaged in e-commerce face fierce competition nowadays. To stay ahead of the competition they need to be visible to the targeted visitors and quickly draw their attention. Ranking higher in the search engines is the first major task, followed by successful branding campaign.

    For a small business owner to achieve their highest and best return on investment, it is crucial to first formulate a strategy before starting an internet marketing campaign. Then you can begin taking advantage of comprehensive SEO tactics involving various proven methods for driving more traffic to your site.

    1. Know your Audience
    This is the most important task since your entire internet marketing campaign is directed towards your niche audience. If you fail to know your audience you will target the wrong people and subsequently lose business. A little research to identify who are your customers and also to know how they look for goods and services in the search engines will help you make the right strategy.

    2. Set a Goal
    Unless you have a well-defined goal, you do not have a direction. Therefore it is important to set the right goal. Once you have your goals clear you can use the optimal amount of resources and channelize your efforts in the right direction. The budget for small business marketing can be estimated once the goal is set.

    3. Select the right SEO techniques
    There are several SEO techniques that will prove helpful for your internet marketing efforts although the amount of benefit you can derive from any single technique can be difficult to ascertain. A mix of various techniques is necessary to have a balanced SEO campaign. Basic SEO will include a balanced
    combination of Niche Directory Submissions, Social Media Marketing, On page optimization through effective Meta tags, great content, a working internal link structure and a site map to name a few. Other important techniques include link building campaigns and excellent PR and article marketing strategies. Oh, and don’t forget about analyzing your competition! What are they doing differently than you? What’s working and where can you make changes to your strategy to achieve similar results? Use Alexa and other traffic/competitive measurement tools to check up on your competition.

    3. Measure the Results
    Without measuring the results and properly analyzing how your website is performing you cannot know if the search engine techniques are bringing positive results. However, it generally takes around 3 – 6 months to get tangible results from an organic online advertising and marketing campaign. Measuring the results periodically will help you identify if anything is wrong in your strategy or if you need to intensify your campaign. I strongly recommend incorporating a measurement tool such as Google Analytics to provide the tools necessary to measure your
    results.

    5. Make proper adjustments
    After measuring your results to determine what’s working and what’s not you will need to make adjustments. Internet marketing is a direct response medium and A/B testing is crucial for success.Make changes to improve your results. This will be an ongoing process, not a one time deal. Google, Yahoo and even the smaller search engines continually change their algorithms. So, what worked one month may not work as well the next. Simple testing and making minor adjustments when needed will keep you ahead of the curve.

    This is something I come across when setting up a new Drupal site, and never can seem to remember how to change the setting. It gets me every time.

    I am officially documenting this process, and hopefully this finds you well on your search for removing the submitted by Username on date text.

    1. Go to your Global Settings (Site Building > Themes > Configure > Global Settings)
    2. The box labeled Display post information on is where you can control which node the information is displayed on.
    3. Check (or uncheck) the boxes.
    4. Save.

    Sounds easy, I know, but it’s the small things like this in Drupal that can be easy to forget.

    Yahoo has added several enhanced targeting features to its search
    marketing advertising solution. The features include enhanced
    geo-targeting, ad scheduling, demographic targeting, and added bid
    adjustments based on those targeting features. In addition, Yahoo has
    improved the content match technology to make the ads more relevant to
    the publisher’s content.

    The new features are available for both sponsored search and content
    match on day one. They can be targeted at the campaign level or on the
    more granular ad group level. In addition, they will be available in
    both the advertiser console and in the API.

    Guy Yalif, Yahoo’s Senior Director of Advertising Products, recently
    walked me through the new features. I thought I would share these
    features with you from the perspective of how the advertiser can
    utilize them in the Yahoo Search Marketing console.

    If you have a website and want to begin SEO, have you thought about it properly? Do you know what you want you want to achieve and have you planned properly? The aim of this article is to give you some advice on the things you need to think about before you get started on your SEO campaign.

    The first thing to say is that if you are considering SEO then your marketing strategy is going along the right lines. However the last thing you want to do is waste money. Before you begin there are some important questions you should ask yourself. Once you have addressed all of them then you are ready to begin:

    1. What do you want to happen?

    This seems a very simple question but it is important to set proper goals. Many companies will focus on getting higher rankings in the search engines. However this is a very vague measure and you should think more in terms of traffic and conversions. Your goal should be to get more people to your website and to increase the percentage of those people that you get to buy your products or services.

    Another important thing to do before you begin is to get an understanding of SEO. If you know nothing about it then how can you expect to find a firm that will be able to effectively carry out your goals? Like in any other area there are plenty of companies that claim to do SEO but really have very little knowledge at all. In order to find a good firm you need to know what questions to ask and the only way to do this is to research the subject and get an understanding yourself.

    2. Where do you want to be?

    You know you want to appear in the search engines, but what do you want to appear for. Think of the main areas of your business and what words you think you have the greatest chance of converting for. You can either research the words yourself or a good SEP company will be able to help. It is important to find words that are not only relevant but also have a high search volume and low competition.

    3. What will it take to achieve your goals?

    Many companies will tell their SEO company that they want to get to the top of the search engines urgently. This is where you should be careful. It is important to point out that there is no magic or any special tricks involved with SEO. The main idea behind search engines is that they want to show interesting popular sites first.

    You might be in the very lucky group of people that already have a popular interesting website and there are just some technical changes needed to help your ranking. However if you are being realistic there are a few things you will need to think about.

    Firstly you might have to wait time to acquire the links you need to be at the top of the search engines. Secondly you may need to employ the services of a copywriter to produce more content for your website that you need to compete. Also remember that the more competitive your keywords the longer it will take and the more work required to get to the top of the search engines.

    4. What will it cost to achieve your goals?

    It is important to know what your SEO efforts will cost you and what your return on investment will be. Remember that SEO experts that do the job properly are hard to come by and so will cost decent money. However the return on investment can be great and well worth the investment.

    Let’s suppose you are spending £5000 per month on your SEO. After a few months you are appearing in the top 2 for the search engines for your keywords. If chosen correctly this could generate you 50,000 visitors per month. Being conservative, let’s suppose you convert 10,000 of those visitors and an average sale for you is £5. This means you will bring in £50,000 of sales giving you an ROI of 1000%. This is clearly an investment you should be making.

    Conclusion

    There is a great saying - Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. What we mean by this is don’t jump into your SEO campaign before you have carefully planned out the route you are going to take. In the long run it will save time and money.

    Just recently, Yahoo was granted with patent analysis from the time it was filed since 2002. A patent analysis is a certain tool that shows how link texts can be useful in increasing the relevancy of rankings of a particular web page. It also provides interesting details on how link texts can be useful for search engines.

    The Importance of Link Texts

    Most of the major search engines focus much on the texts to be used in the links that will be helpful in the linking of web pages. Some web pages are more oriented and give relevance on the searched term of the web surfers. However, there are some web pages that get higher rankings on search engines even though they do not contain the searched term as long as they are link to web pages that contained the search terms. This idea had been demonstrated with several Google bombs.

    How Do Search Engines Treat the Link Texts

    Have you ever thought why link texts are very important for search engines? Well, the answer to this wandering is very clear since link texts give weight to search engines while indexing web pages. In this way, the patent analysis becomes important since link texts can be broken into parts called the “tokens”. Here is a sample that can be use as reference:
    Page 306 has phrase “best Louis Armstrong site. The tokenization produces the following tokens:
    “Best Louis Armstrong site”
    “Louis Armstrong”
    “Louis”
    “Armstrong”
    “Best”
    “Best Louis”
    “Best Armstrong”
    “Best site”

    For each of the tokens above, the algorithms of search engines are calculating the weights. If the weight exceeds the threshold.

    How Weights are Calculated by Search Engines

    The sequences of every word or word for word are greatly considered by most search engines especially on how often the token appears in the index in every found word in link texts. Search engines also consider on words that usually appear the least frequently in the search indexes. One reason for this is that some words are more often related to the searched topics. Furthermore, tokens that appear more often on link texts give higher weight of pointing to the special web pages.

    The Importance of Patent Analysis to Your Websites

    Most of the major search engines use the method of patent analysis to be able to rank pages. To make sure that you can get high rankings on the displayed results of search engines your website should have good inbound links with the right link texts. Web pages or sites with good optimization are important since it provides relevancy of the keywords to the search engines. In this way, the higher the chances are that the web pages are displayed with high ranking results.

    The DOs of Getting High Rankings on Google and Yahoo

    In as much as you can, optimize your websites with keywords. Special keywords are also best for your websites.

    Try to secure many inbound links if possible for your websites. These links should be able to use the targeted keywords in the link texts. Avoid using exactly the same texts over and over again. You can vary your link texts but use related words of different expressions for the links of your websites.

    There are occasions where you might want to search for a phrase within a string in PHP. Using the PHP function strpos we can do just this nice and easily.

    It could be that you want to check to see if something exists within a string, maybe as part of some validation or as a conditional action. PHP enables to do this very simply and this can come in handy in all sorts of situations.

    As an example, I want to see if the word “string” appears in a sentence.

    $sentence = ‘Using strpos we can find out if a string exists in another string’;

    if ( strpos($sentence, ’string’) ) {
       // yes it does
    } else {
       // no it doesn’t
    }

    Obviously you can populate the sentence variable with database content within a loop or similar during practical applications.

    Also quite handy in PHP 5 only is the stripos function, which works in exactly the same way, but is case insensitive. So as an example the following would still find a result, whereas when using strpos it does not:

    $sentence = ‘Using stripos we can find out if a String exists even though it has a capital letter in it’;

    if ( stripos($sentence, ’string’) ) {
       // yes it does
    } else {
       // no it doesn’t
    }

    PHP 5’s ability to read XML files is fantastically easy to use. In the past it was possible but it required quite a bit of long winded code to get any where. PHP 5’s SimpleXmlElement function makes working with XML a breeze, and with much less code too! Let’s take the following example:

    $feed = file_get_contents(’http://www.mywebsite.com/rss/’);

    $rss = new SimpleXmlElement($feed);

    foreach($rss->channel->item as $entry) {
       echo “<p><a href=’$entry->link’ title=’$entry->title’>” . $entry->title . “</a></p>”;
    }

    In the above example we want to display the contents of an RSS feed, in our example http://www.mywebsite.com/rss/. Using the file_get_contents function we can get the contents of this RSS file and put them in a variable called $feed. We then use the SimpleXmlElement function to process the RSS feed and put it in a format we can use. This usable format (now an objext) is stored in $rss.

    The $rss object can now be used to get any information that was in our RSS feed. The foreach loop does just that, looping through each item
